Make garden tools do double duty as handy makeshift rulers. Tools with long handles, such as shovels, hoes and rakes can be made into measuring sticks. Lay the handles onto the floor and place a measuring tape beside them. A permanent marker can be used to label distances. Now you will always possess a large ruler ready for your use in the garden.

You don’t need expensive chemicals to treat powdery mildew on plants. Plain water with a bit of liquid soap and baking soda will do the trick. Then, spray this mixture onto all of your infected plants once each week till the mildew is gone. Baking soda will bring no damage to your plants, and will treat the mildew in a gentle and efficient manner.

Make a plan for your garden. Use your seed packages to make fun markers that will remind you where each type of plant is growing. You can also avoid losing the smaller plants, or in larger gardens, the small plant groups.

In a dark area, pre-soak your seeds overnight. Put some seeds (a small amount) in a container that isn’t too large for the plant you’ll be growing. Fill that container with water, almost to the top. When you do this, you hydrate your seeds and they can start growing. Seeds that are grown in this way have a higher survival and maturity rate.

Now, you shouldn’t get your hopes up and believe that a few tips are going to turn you into an instant professional gardener. However, these tips are a great starting point if you do plan to grow organically. As you implement these tips and hone your skills, you’ll be a professional green-thumb-holder in no time.
